7 Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail has been labeled the “The best public golf on earth” and arguably the best golf destination package in the United States. The RTJ Golf Trail was developed in the late 1980’s as a way for the state of Alabama to diversify assets of the state pension fund. David Bronner, CEO of Retirement Systems of Alabama, developed a vision to build the largest collection of public golf courses in the state. Legendary golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. was contracted to design the project. Jones, Sr. has designed over 500 golf courses worldwide.

The original eight sites on the RTJ Golf Trail span over 100 miles and 378 holes of golf. The Trail holds the distinction as the largest golf course construction project undertaken at one time anywhere in the world. Since 2005, the RTJ Golf Trail has added three more sites offering a total of 11 sites with 26 courses and 468 holes of golf.

The Trail offers one of the unique and exciting golf experiences in the world. The courses challenge the best players in the world and still allow an enjoyable experience for higher handicap players. In fact, the RTJ Trail offers as many as 12 different tee boxes depending on ability level.

The RTJ Golf Trail prides itself on accessibility. The Trail offers several specials throughout the year. A popular option is to build your own custom package along the RTJ Golf Trail. Simply pick where and when you would like to play, and the Trail reservation staff will even book hotels along the way. Annual Memberships are available that include unlimited play at 9 of the 11 sites. Green fees start at $65 per round, however; prices vary by Trail site and the time of season. In addition, the RTJ Trail offers junior golfers reduced greens fees.

The entire RTJ Golf Trail lineup offers highly rated courses that have received several awards from Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Travel + Leisure Golf. The most decorated courses along the Trail include Capital Hill, Grand National, and Ross Bridge..

The RTJ Golf Trail is host to several tournaments each year, highlighted by PGA and LPGA Tour stops. The PGA debuts the Barbasol Championship at Grand National in August. The LPGA features two stops on the RTJ Golf Trail. The Airbus LPGA Classic will play at the Magnolia Grove in May. The Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic visits Capital Hill in late August.
