Sunningdale Golf Club, the quintessential English Club, is host of The 2015 Senior Open Championship. The Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale Golf Club is being held at the Old Course, which opened in 1901 and is ranked the second-best golf course in England by Golf World.
This year’s field hosts six past winners at Sunningdale, including Bernhard Langer, Sir Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Gordon Brand Jr., and Peter Senior who each won the European Open when it was held at Sunningdale, and Loren Roberts who won the Senior Open in 2009, which is the last time it was held there. This year, record-breaking German player Bernhard Langer will be defending the Senior Open Championship title he won by 13 shots at Royal Porthcawl last summer.
The Old Course was originally designed by Willie Park, Jr., in 1901 as one of the first inland courses. Many people believed that inland turf would not grow well so far from the seaside, but the course has more than proven this notion wrong. Over the years, Sunningdale has hosted numerous championships including the World Match Play, the British Masters, The Walker Cup, the European Open, and the Women’s British Open.
The course, which is laid out on a glorious piece of heathland, plays to a par 70 and totals 6,627 yards from the championship tees. Considered by many to be one of the best inland courses in the U.K., Sunningdale is always ranked in the Top 100 courses in international ratings lists.
Sunningdale is open to the public year-round, Monday through Thursday, for golfers with a recognized golf club handicap certificate of 18, for men, and 24, for ladies.
