Callaway Gardens’ origins date back to 1949 when Cason Callaway had a vision that “playing golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings.” The Lake View Course was completed and opened just two years later and truly captured Callaway’s vision.
Callaway Gardens is now home to both a fully expanded, 18-hole, Lake View Course and the new Mountain View Course. In addition, their practice facility is one of the highest ranked facilities in the country. Surrounded by stunning wetlands and forests, Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain, Georgia certainly has a magical southern charm like that of no other.
Lake View Course
The original golf course at Callaway Gardens, the Lake View Course was designed with the notion that if a golfer lifts his or her head on a shot, they should see something beautiful. Lake View certainly lives up to its designer’s expectations. At only 6,000 yards from the tips, you can put your driver aside and focus more on finesse rather than power, especially with its tricky little greens.
Containing nine water holes and a staggering landscape of dogwoods, azaleas and seasonal flowers, the challenge of this course lies with its relationship to the natural environment. In 2002, the Lake View Course underwent major renovations including new greens, bunkers, cart paths and landscaping, winning 4 stars for Golf’s Digest’s “Places to Play” award.
Mountain View Course
Where Lake View concentrates more on skill, the Mountain View Course focuses more on having power behind your swing. With bigger bunkers, stronger slopes, and bolder angles compared to its partner, Mountain View will challenge even the most advanced players.
Water is not much of an obstacle on this course, rather its hilly terrain makes shot placement particularly important.
Home to the Buick Challenge from 1991-2002, it’s clear why the professionals enjoy playing here so much. However, Mountain View is very playable for golfers of all abilities.
Mountain View Course also has four very strong final holes. Including the signature, par-5, 15th hole where a lake runs parallel on the entire right side, a couple mounds on the left side, and ends with the green hanging out over the water.
