Lighthouses serve as some of the most iconic landmarks at golf courses across the globe. And while they don’t allow to you play golf at night, they do make for some stunning backdrops – and occasional target lines! So from coast to coast and across the pond, we’ve rounded up some of the world’s most famous golf course lighthouses.
Golf Course Lighthouses Around the World
1. Harbour Town Golf Links
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
The Harbour Town Lighthouse is showcased annually during the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage. And at just 53 years old, it’s one of the youngest golf course lighthouses on our list. Nestled behind the 18th green, the lighthouse is open seven days a week and visitors can climb 114 steps to the top of the candy-cane structure for stunning views of Hilton Head Island. The lighthouse is also home to an array of exhibits and a gift shop.
2. Old Head Golf Links
The rugged cliffs, the perfectly manicured tee boxes – it’s quite the juxtaposition and creates a visual unlike any other at Old Head Golf Links. Add in the Old Head of Kinsale Lighthouse and it’s easily one of the most stunning golf course views in the world. The lighthouse itself is located at the southern tip of the headland behind the 18th tee boxes. It was built in 1853 and served as a beacon for travelers on the Atlantic Ocean.
3. Sankaty Head Golf Club
Sankaty Head Golf Club, nestled on the coast of Nantucket, oozes class and charm. Construction of the lighthouse next to the golf course was completed in 1849 and remains under the management of the U.S. Coast Guard to this day. The lighthouse is best enjoyed on the front nine at Sankaty Head Golf Club, most notably on the 4th and 5th holes. Not only is the lighthouse a Nantucket icon, but it’s also the inspiration for Sankaty Head Golf Club’s logo.
4. The Ailsa – Trump Turnberry
What would Trump Turnberry be without its iconic lighthouse? The Turnberry Lighthouse has greeted ships since 1873 and it’s one of many century-old structures on the property. Today, it’s one of golf’s most incredible halfway houses and it even features a beautiful two-bedroom suite with tastefully appointed rooms and jaw-dropping ocean vistas.
5. Pacific Grove Golf Links
Pacific Grove, California
While the golf course takes center stage at Pacific Grove Golf Links, the Point Pinos Lighthouse can’t be ignored. Built in 1855, it’s the longest continuously operating lighthouse on the west coast. And as golf course lighthouses go, Point Pinos certainly isn’t the tallest but it is one of the most beautiful.
