This one got its name from what&#8217;s buried underneath. Millions of years ago, the ocean covered this part of the state, and the creatures that lived and died there left behind a trove of fossils that gave the area its nickname. The digging hasn&#8217;t stopped turning them up: workers unearthed ancient remains while shaping the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kidd, best known for the original course at Bandon Dunes, is the latest big-name architect to leave a mark here. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw built the Red and the 19-hole Chain, Tom Doak built the Blue, and Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner built the Black. Streamsong has taken to calling the group its &#8220;Mount Rushmore&#8221; of minimalist design, and Bone Valley makes four full-length 18s on the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bar is high. Red, Blue and Black all sit inside the top 40 on GOLF Magazine&#8217;s ranking of America&#8217;s best public courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"preview-play-what-it-means-and-how-to-get-on\">Preview play: what it means and how to get on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good news for anyone itching to play: the course was in such good shape that Streamsong opened previews about six weeks ahead of the planned October 30 date. Average players will have fun out here; low handicaps will still have to earn their score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The setting:<\/strong> Decades of phosphate mining reshaped this land into ridges, hollows and sand, and the routing rides right along with it. You won&#8217;t see a single home, just wide-open Florida country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plenty of room, with a catch:<\/strong> Missing the fairway is hard. Hitting the right part of it is the real test, because your angle into the green decides how tough the next shot gets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clever greens:<\/strong> They run a touch smaller than the ones on Black, but the slopes around them work like backboards if you read them right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The one to circle:<\/strong> Kidd has compared the course to the links of Ireland, and the par-5 14th, which cuts through an enormous ridge, is the hole people keep talking about.
